The word was god
St. Olaf Choir performs “The Word Was God” by Rosephanye Powell; Christmas in Norway pbs.
Compositionally, this is an excellent piece using impressive techniques that are truly captivating. The rhythmic structure develops from the superb interplay between the voices, and the layering of sound upon sound creates a musical tapestry.

Passionate and Purposeful
“Your gifts will open doors for you, and if you are a genuine person, when that door opens, it will keep opening wider. If you have the talent and the skills and doors open, but you don’t have the heart or the personality to relate to people, that door will only open with limitations.”

Be Glad in the Lord
In celebration of Philip Brunelle’s 40th year as organist/choirmaster of Plymouth Congregational Church (Minneapolis, MN), Rosephanye commissioned this piece in his honor. “Be Glad the Lord” features joyful rhythms and motivically-building lines, which brings a familiar spiritual quality to this original work.
I Dream A World
Based on the poem “To You” by Harlem Renaissance jazz poet, playwright and social activist Langston Hughes, “I Dream A World” depicts Hughes’ juxtaposition of the world that is and the world that could be.

Representation Within the Choral Industry
“I am humbled to be able to represent an aspect of the African-American voice in American concert choral music. And mine is just one voice. However, I do believe that because of the opportunity that has been afforded to me, I am able to share some of the African-American experience with others nationally and internationally. As much as I enjoy composing and hearing my works performed by others, I enjoy equally the opportunities that being a composer provides for sharing my heritage… culturally and musically.”
